Boat Spectator Information

Introduction:

Whilst in the UAE capital, the five-strong Volvo Ocean Race fleet are competing in a series of events, before departing on leg three to Sanya, China on 14th January. A number of on-shore viewing opportunities are available yet the best way to get up close to the action is on the water – and details on how to do that are below:

Visiting Yachts:

Private yacht owners wishing to visit the Volvo Ocean Race Abu Dhabi Destination Village and stay overnight are advised to make reservations at Emirates Palace Marina, by contacting Capt Toby Haws [email protected]. Volvo Ocean Race management has negotiated special berthing facilities for this purpose.

Volvo Ocean Race - Racing Days:

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet will race on January 12, 13 & 14 when a strict on-water protocol for visiting yachts will be implemented. Various restriction zones have been created to avoid conflict between racing yachts and charter or private spectator yachts.

Restriction Zones:

The Volvo Ocean Race sailing courses will be set by the Race Sailing Manager 24 hours before the start, according to the weather and wind conditions predicted for that day. Once the course is decided, restriction zones for spectator and charter yachts will be issued for each day, no later than 24 hours before the event start.All on-water vessels must act within the strict guidelines of Volvo Ocean Race Sailing Management.All accredited vessels will be called to a mandatory skipper briefing 48 hours prior to the official sailing event. All final information and relative zone flags will be handed over during the briefing.
